Zapcat Powerboat Grand Prix

...experience Zapcat in Newquay

The thrilling opening races of the Zapcat powerboat season come to Cornwall this year, when the race weekend gets the season underway at Newquay's famous Fistral Beach on the weekend of May 21st and 22nd.

The only leg of the circuit to take place on a surfing beach, the weekend begins with a grand Zapcats parade through the town, featuring competitors and boats and providing an opportunity to meet the teams and see the super-powered boats up close. Practice sessions take place on the Friday followed by a weekend comprising over 35 thrill-a-minute races.

Entertainment and food & drink stalls are also on hand to make it a weekend to remember for all the family.

The racing sees up to 16 heats culminate in two divisional finals on both days, with competitors vying for crucial points towards the title they all want, the National Championships. Different categories such as Rookie, Team, Mixed and more compete for points, all of which count towards that grand October finale.

Teams, including local Royal Marines from RAF St Mawgan, scythe through the Atlantic swells, undertaking daring and nerve-shredding aerial leaps as they launch themselves through the sea at breakneck speeds. The course takes the vessels out to the Fistral Headland, before they turn south and return parallel to the beach - giving spectators a great view from every vantage point.

Newquay has become known as the capital of UK surfing and adrenaline-fuelled experiences, and the addition of the Zapcat Grand Prix only reinforces Newquay’s reputation. Free entertainment doesn’t come much better.
