West Somerset Railway
...a memory not to be forgotten of the way train travel should be, elegant and unhurried.
A not to be missed experience of train travel in days gone by. The sights and sounds of train doors, guard’s whistles, the beautifully presented stations and 22 miles of stunning Somerset coastline and countryside to enjoy along the way.
Started in the late 19th century, when the first West Somerset Railway Company was incorporated, the line was to join the West Somerset iron fields and coast to the Bristol and Exeter Railway. Over the following 60 years the line was developed and extended until the West Somerset Railway Company was absorbed into the Great Western Railway in 1922.
The line was continually modernised and redeveloped by first the Great Western Railway and then British Rail over a number of decades until finally in 1970 the closure of the entire branch line was sanctioned by the Minister of Transport. The line closed on 2nd January 1971 however by May of that year the new West Somerset Railway Company Limited had been incorporated and work began to preserve the route to what is now the longest standard gauge heritage railway in the country.
The line now runs over 22 miles between Minehead and Bishops Lydeard covering stations at Dunster, Blue Anchor, Washford, Watchet, Doniford Halt, Williton, Stogumber and Crowcombe Heathfield passing through stunning coastal scenery and beautiful countryside.
A regular service runs everyday throughout the summer from 10.00 am until around 6.00 pm on either steam or diesel locomotives with limited services available during the winter months. Please check with the booking office for details.
