The Plowden Arms Henley on Thames
Award winning country pub and restaurant near Henley on Thames in Oxfordshire, specialising in favourite and forgotten drinks and dishes from bygone British eras
Set in beautiful countryside just a few minutes’ walk from the River Thames, the award-winning Plowden Arms is a delightfully traditional country pub.
Taken over by the proud new owners Matthew and Ruth in October 2012, the pub reflects how passionate they are about history, tradition and hospitality – unashamedly old fashioned with a charming 1920's feel. Matt demonstrates his skills as head chef, having cut his cloth working for some of London's top chefs, including Gordon Ramsay.
The quaint white-washed exterior has a cottagey feel complete with cute windows set in a pitched roof. Inside the relaxing surroundings cater for all seasons; there is a cosy bar area with a blazing log fire as well as a function space that opens on to the large beer garden for summer dining. Playing in the background, music from the 20s and 30s will transport you back to the good old days – if you’re not already there!
On the bar you'll find traditional ales, a carefully considered wine list and a monthly changing drink also reminiscent of bygone eras, such as dandelion and burdock or gin fizz. Food focuses on high-quality British dishes using local produce. Taking influence from well-known cookbooks by Eliza Acton and Mrs Beeton and recipes from centuries ago, these dishes are beautifully revived and served on vintage crockery. Daily specials are also offered, as well as an exceptional Sunday roast (Finalist 2013 British Roast Week awards) and even the odd outdoor hog roast.
