The locality is extremely popular with tourists all year round, and is in close proximity to the famous Portmeirion Italianate Village, the Ffestiniog Railway, Harlech, Caernarfon, Conwy, Dolwyddelan and Penrhyn Castles, miles of sandy beaches, walking, riding, golf and many other attractions. Maentwrog is just minutes from Porthmadog, with major A road connections to Caernarfon, Bangor and Llandudno junction. There are also trains from Porthmadog to Llandudno junction. From Llanduno Junction, Chester is only 30 minutes away, and London is just 3 hours.
History of The Old Rectory
The Old Rectory is built of locally quarried slate, featuring unusual flying buttress chimneys. The property was originally The Dower House, then the Stewards Lodge, for the huge slate quarry/land owners of Plas Tun u Butch, being enlarged to the present size in 1840, when it was bequeathed to the Ffestiniog Parish as the Rectory for Maentwrog Church.
