Tewkesbury Mop fair

Tewkesbury Mop Fair

Tewkesbury Mop Fair dates: WEDNESDAY 9th & THURSDAY 10th OCTOBER 2013 .

Tewkesbury will have its streets taken over by the annual Mop Fair.

A great event for all the family to enjoy.

In the past farm workers, labourers, servants and some craftsmen traditionally worked for their employer from October to October. at the end of their working year they would all meet at the Mop Fair dressed in their Sunday best and carrying an item signifying their trade aned looking for future work. A servant with no particular skills would carry a mop head – hence the phrase Mop Fair. The Mop Fair traditionally takes place at the end of the harvest, and only a small number of towns still hold the event.

Although the fair is no longer a place to find work there is plenty of entertainment, including rides, games and snack stands.

The children’s rides get turned on at approximately 2.30/3pm on both days and other rides are on from approximately 6pm until around 10.30pm
