Brief History of Saundersfoot

Saundersfoot originally built up around the coal and anthracite industries during the 18th century, shipping coal from numerous local collieries, as well as iron ore, as far away as Scandinavia. As industrial activity increased, the village grew. At the same time summer visitor numbers began to increase aStar Tand hotels were built to accommodate holiday makers. Unfortunately by the end of 1939 all the local pits had closed, mainly due to the difficulty of working the local seams, and coal mining in the area came to an end. Luckily, visitors provided some much needed impetus to the local economy and today Saundersfoot is a thriving holiday destination.
