Sandringham Estate

Introduction

Sandringham is the much-loved country retreat of Her Majesty the Queen, and has been the private home of four generations of British monarchs since 1862.

Sandringham Estate is The Queen's private estate and The Duke of Edinburgh took on overall responsibility for its management at the start of Her Majesty's reign in 1952.  One of His Royal Highness's principles has been to maintain the estate for future generations, so conservation has always been an important part of the Estate's management practices.  Over five thousand trees and several miles of hedges are planted each year, ten wetland areas have been created, sympathetic farming practices encourage many different species of wildlife, and food waste, glass, metals, plastic, cardboard and paper are all recycled.

Sandringham's gardens were opened to the public by King Edward VII in 1908, and the Museum by King George V in 1930; Sandringham House was opened to the public at Her Majesty The Queen's wish in her Silver Jubilee year of 1977.

Sandringham is a friendly and informal place to visit, with knowledgeable guides in every room of the house and acres of beautiful gardens to explore while the Museum houses extraordinary collections of Royal vehicles, rare ceramics, photographs and memorabilia.

There is plenty to see and do around the estate as well - you'll need at least four hours to be sure you can see everything, and if you have a whole day to spend, all the better.  Don't miss the parish church of St Mary Magdalene with its hosts of carved and painted angels and its many Royal memorials; the tractor and trailer tour of the Country Park saves tired legs, and of course the Restaurant or Stables Tea Room can offer reviving hot or cold drinks, snacks and meals before you investigate the Gift Shop and Plant Centre.
