Run to the Sun 2012
...unique Newquay festival
Festivals come in all shapes and sizes these days, but few manage to blend car, dance, beach and festival cultures into one big event as successfully as Run to the Sun. Now into its 26th year, Newquay’s Run to the Sun festival is getting bigger and better.
Holidays in Cornwall
The festival has been running since 1987, when just 70 cars were displayed. Now one of Europe’s biggest VW and custom car festivals, Run to the Sun’s popularity has grown organically and now attracts upwards of 10,000 revellers.
Held at Trevelgue Holiday Park in Newquay, Run to the Sun is principally a celebration and showcase of VWs and custom cars, a meet up for enthusiasts who descend on the Cornwall resort in their droves. And their VW Camper vans.
VW magazine Volksworld organise a formal ‘VW cruise’ to the festival, with participants gathering at the starting point – Reading services on the M4 – to form an almighty procession of VW and custom cars, with more fanatics joining the convoy at the various services en-route. This year's cruise departs Reading at 9.30am.
While the main attraction is undeniably the vehicles, Run to the Sun is far from a petrol-heads only affair. Three usually sun-drenched days of live music and comedy ensures there’s something for everyone – be it chilled out, open air acoustic slots, full on rocking out from live bands, or the immersive chaos of the 3D rave tent.
The entertainment was split between six arenas, and acts gracing the main dance stage in 2011 included big names such as Grooverider and Micky Finn. The popular and revolutionary Silent Disco were back in Arena 3, while comedy, chill out zones, live bands and more can be found elsewhere.
2012's line up is yet to be announced but it's sure to be another cracker.
Run to the Sun 2012 takes place between 1st - 4th June.
