Portland Retreat is less than two kilometres from the famous Portland Bill and five kilometres from Portland Harbour, the venue for the 2012 Olympic sailing/windsurfing events. As the largest rental property on Portland there’s plenty of room for a range of activities, or just lounging around watching satellite TV, or updating Facebook on the Wi-Fi Broadband. Most holidaymakers on Portland have to fight for street parking, which is where the Retreat is another winner, with its safe parking area for a large car or boat and additional on-road parking in the immediate vicinity. The Retreat is also exceptional on Portland for its wonderful, large, sunny, fully-enclosed, lawned garden where children can play safely, while adults relax on the wooden garden furniture.
Portland and Weymouth enjoys 32 % more sunshine than the U K average, so you will probably want to spend as much time outside as you can. Portland is a walker’s paradise, with coastal routes over every part of it and access to the coastal paths just 100 metres from the Retreat. There’s tons of history, as well as secluded little coves like Church Ope, with its ruined 14th Century Rufus Castle, along with the 13th Century St Andrew’s Church and graveyard. Portland Bill and its lighthouses are within easy walking distance and some of the most spectacular views of the Jurassic Coast, England's first natural World Heritage Site, are only minutes away from the Retreat. With 40% of Dorset designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there are plenty of other spectacular walks nearby, such as Lyme Regis and its famous Cobb, all part of the South West Coast Path, Britain's longest National Trail.
For the more athletically inclined, there is almost every form of water sport known to man on the Retreat’s doorstep: swimming, surfing, paragliding, waterskiing, windsurfing, diving, fishing, kayaking, as well as kiting, and hang gliding for the truly adventurous. With around 1,000 different climbing routes at all different grades (from V0-8b), Portland is a popular destination for climbers of all ages and abilities. Portland is considered to be the best place in the UK for bird watching with over 350 different documented species at the Portland Bird Observatory. Portland is also popular with Artists of all kinds and courses in stone sculpting at Tout Quarry are very popular.
Families are particularly well catered for in the area with Weymouth’s wonderful sandy beach one of the safest in Britain allowing a laid-back more traditional seaside experience. Weymouth’s Sea Life Park has over 1,000 creatures making it the biggest park of its kind in the UK with both indoor and outdoor displays and a host of things for all ages to do and see. Families could easily spend a whole day there as well as spending a day at Adventure Wonderland, which is Dorset's most visited family theme park. The Swanage Railway is a 6 mile long stretch of track, calling at Corfe Castle and offering a unique heritage steam and diesel train experience. On the way there, you could visit the Tank Museum by Blandford, which houses the world's best collection of tanks. They have a range of displays and exhibitions across 6 large halls, including the only working Tiger Tank and almost 200 other vehicles on display. Monkey World is another all-year-round attraction just 22 miles from the Retreat. Monkey World has the largest group of chimpanzees outside of Africa among a total of over 230 primates and also has picnic areas, cafes, a gift shop, a baby room, play areas, amusements and a viewing tower. There are many other attractions throughout the area to cater for every need.
While the Retreat’s garden is ideal for a BBQ, for many, being on holiday means not cooking at all and you are well served by places to eat out on your doorstep. There is a Restaurant at the Venue Hotel some 250 metres away and L ’n’ O’s Bistro in Weston is an easy walk. Then of course there are a number of pubs that serve food also within walking distance and a revitalising walk to Portland Bill on a Sunday morning will allow you to sample one of the two great carveries at the Pulpit Inn or the Lobster Pot Café looking across to the lighthouse and the Portland race. The view from the restaurant at the Heights Hotel, particularly at sunset, is unforgettable, as is the fresh seafood at the Crab House Café at ferry Bridge. Closer to home, there are chip shops and take-aways close at hand that will deliver to your door.
