About

Porters Cottage is a delightful listed stone built cottage at the base of the Mendip Hills in the village of Axbridge. A perfect base for walkers and those looking for an ideal spot for exploring further afield.

The Cottage is located just 2 miles from Cheddar Gorge and makes an ideal base for walking the Mendips or discovering Somerset. The cottage is set down the end of a private road and has just undergone complete refurbishment, providing a high standard of fittings and accommodation.

Somerset spreads across the West Country and is famous for cider and cheese (there are lots of local cidar houses to try out).  The Mendip Hills are to the north and run across from Weston-super-mare, past Wells and onto Frome, and have been designated an Area of Outstanding Beauty. They offer countless walks, and views across the reclaimed Somerset Levels.  From within the levels rises Glastonbury Tor, and the legends surrounding King Arthur and Avalon abound.   Also to be visited are the Quantock Hills to the South of Axbridge.

Places to visit in the area also include Wookey Hole, Weston-super-Mare, Bristol, Wells, Bath, Street, Frome and Taunton.  A little further are Slimbridge, Berkeley Castle, Longleat House and Safari Park and Stonehenge.

Bristol has tourist attractions including the Suspension Bridge, @Bristol and Zoo.
Bath has tourist attractions including the Costume Museum, Roman Baths and Spa, Jane Austen centre and cathedral.

Axbridge itself dates back to Medieval times, and still has a 13th century church and King Johns Hunting Lodge. Local shops are based around the old market square (used now for Farmers markets), along with Inns and restaurants.  All this is just a stroll away.  To the far end of Axbridge is a large reservoir which provides sailing, water sports and walks.  A bus service within Axbridge will take you to Wells or Weston-super-Mare.
