J W & J Mettam Ltd
Funeral Directors in Bakewell
J.W. & J. Mettam Ltd was established in 1899 by the two Mettam brothers. Jim was joined by his two sons, Jack and Bill. They continued to develop the business and expanded both the funeral and woodwork side of the company. Ron Prince was for many years the funeral director at Mettams. He joined the firm in 1937 and retired in 2000. A tremendous 63 years of loyal service.
The Jepson family acquired Mettams in 1981 and they appointed Wendy Hanna in 1987. Wendy has successfully run Mettams since Ron retired.
Mettams for several years had tried to obtain planning permission for a new funeral home at their original site in Milford. This was not successful due to objections from the Environment Agency because of the close proximaty to the River Wye.
In September 2007 Mettams acquired Ambrose Printing works at Granby Croft and in January 2008 planning permission was granted to convert this building into funeral premises.
The Dowager Duchess of Devonshire officially opened the premises on Thursday September 18th 2008 which included a service of dedication conducted by local clergy.
Sad in many ways to leave our original site established in 1899 but excited by the prospect of providing first class facilities at our new funeral home in such a central location with ample parking.
