Honiton Visitor Guide

Introduction

Honiton, situated in East Devon and easily accessible from the A30 & A303 is a characterful market town in the valley of the River Otter, and ideally situated for exploring the World Heritage Coast and Jurassic Coastline.

Honiton is perhaps best knows for the traditional lace making that took place in the town during the 1600's. To this day, lace is still being made in Honiton, allbeit on a much smaller scale and can be found on sale in the local shops in the town. The "Allhallows Museum" - which is the oldest building in Honiton - part of which date back to the 15th Century - houses a wonderful display of traditional lace.

During the mid 1700's Honiton suffered a series of devasting fires, and many buildings were lost. By luck however, Honiton still retains its characterful 18th century feel as the damaged buildings were rebuilt and replaced with magnificent Georgian residences. It is then perhaps that by no chance Honiton has now become an immensly popular destination for antique collectors and bargain hunters alike  - with around 30 antique shops and regular auctions the choice and quality of items is second to none.

Honiton has no shortage of places to stop for a bite to eat - from pubs, restaurants, cafes and hotels there's sure to be somewhere to suit both your palate and budget. With the High Street being around 1 mile long, there are also a good variety to shops to browse in.

The street markets are held very Tuesday and Saturday on the High Street, they have an excellent selection of traders selling everything from flowers, collectables & curios, local fresh produce, clothing and much much more. There is a real "buzz" to the town on market days.
