Want to try “glamping”? Otherwise known as glamorous camping. Just three miles from Totnes and less than a mile from Littlehempston lies the small hamlet of Hemsford. Hemsford Yurt Camp is perfectly located within the picturesque rolling Devon countryside.
Liz and Alan Jeffery have introduced the 2 traditional Mongolian Yurts to Hemsford Farm newly for 2012. Our Yurt camp is situated in the tranquil Hems Valley, near Littlehempston. Enjoy a unique and memorable glamping holiday with a difference in an authentic Yurt. Our Yurts are situated in a small meadow overlooking the river Hems which is a small tributary to the River Dart.
The authentic Mongolian yurts are comfortably furnished to high standards with full sized beds, bedding provided, and wood burning stoves. Staying in a traditional Yurt is ideally suited for both families and groups or as a private retreat and for those who would like to camp in a serene and peaceful location with an unusual twist. The yurt camp can also cater for those people looking for a unique honeymoon location, or the camp can also be used for private parties. Enjoy the peace and tranquillity of this beautiful private rural location.
For those who own their own horse and want to enjoy a quiet riding holiday we can, as an addition provide top class stabling in our private yard with turnout in lush paddocks adjacent to your Yurt.
The camp is off grid and has its own solar power supply. The camp has a small but well equipped kitchenette and a shower, flushing toilet and washroom. Our camp site is fully licensed by South Hams District Council and we are fully insured for public liability.
The lake in the yurt field is home to a huge number of flora and fauna, including wild ducks and geese, dragonflies, newts and pond skaters amongst the massive number of British indigenous species to be observed.
We can promise you dark skies in a glorious rural location. Our yurt camp is suited for those seeking quiet reflection in a peaceful yet easy accessible location.
Totnes, the nearest town has weekly markets and a large selection of highly individual small shops along with the regular supermarkets and pharmacies. Totnes is known for the rich diversity of people and shops within its narrow streets. Totnes has its own castle and lies on the banks of the River Dart.
The nearby local village at Broadhampston, Littlehempston and Staverton have a selection of pubs and inns with excellent food and local produce featured in their menu.

Our Hems yurt is a 6 metre diameter yurt that has been imported from Mongolia. It has a green painted door with traditional decoration and traditional motifs on the outer cover. Inside it has exposed khana (willow wall lattice). It has a Green decorated door, and green painted and decorated crown wheel.
The Hems yurt can sleep 6 persons comfortably in a king sized bed, a double bed and 2 single beds. The Hems yurt is located on the right hand side of the paddock with a view across the large lake field towards the river Hems in the distance. Inside the yurt there is a log burning stove for those cooler evenings - a supply of logs is included for our guests. These can be used on the wood burner or outside in the fire pit. Also inside there is a table and chairs, some comfy chairs with throws, solar lighting and lanterns, bedside tables and rugs on the floor.
Our Dart yurt is a 5 metre diameter authentic Mongolian yurt which has been hand painted and decorated with traditional symbolic designs. The yurt has been imported from Mongolia, taking 3 months to arrive on a boat to to the UK. The inner walls (khana) are covered from view by a liner with more symbolic hand stitched designs.
The Dart Yurt has orange painted door and roof rafters and has 2 decorated dragon posts supporting the crown wheel. The Dart yurt can sleep up to 4 persons in one double bed and 2 single beds. It has a sweet little log burning stove in the yurt, complete with fire guard. The stove can be used to heat the yurt, or just to provide a welcoming warming fire for our guests on those chillier evenings. Our beds have comfy memory foam mattresses with some animal print bedding for those who love glamping in style!
For those who are keen horse owners, why not enjoy your holiday with a difference by bringing your horse or pony with you on your holiday to Devon. Stay in our yurts whilst your horse or pony can be accommodated in our modern stable block situated only a short distance away in the field adjacent to the yurt camp. Stables are full size 12’x 12, complete with automatic watering and turnout if required, Hay, feed and Bedding can be supplied also if required.
There is ample parking for your horse box/trailer adjacent to the stables. Routes can be supplied for interesting rides exploring the Devon countryside surrounding Hemsford or why not explore Dartmoor National Park with 365 square miles of open moorland, looming tors and steep valleys covered in bracken and heather all within an easy 20 minute drive, ideal for walking, riding and exploring.
Locally we are one mile from Redpost Equestrian Ltd ( http://www.redpostequestrian.co.uk/) and their show field – with many BSJA competitions held throughout the year along with both formal and informal shows and events/clinics some at weekends and others during the week and in the evenings. There are plenty of beautiful hacks in the rural countryside and petal ride maps can be supplied on request - please telephone for details.
