East Somerset Railway
...re-live yester-year with the sight and smell of steam in the air
The doors clunk, the flags are waved and the whistle blown, you sit back and listen to the sound of the engine chugging away from the station, steam billowing back from the fire and you relax into the way life was.
The line, built in the mid 19th century originally ran on broad gauge and linked Witham with Shepton Mallet, later continuing onto Wells. When Great Western Railways bought the line in 1874 it joined it with the Cheddar Valley line but due to problems with the gauge size it had to be converted to standard gauge in order to link correctly.
Following the Beeching cuts of 1963 the line was finally closed to passengers although bitumen trains continued until 1985.
Now running a section of line between Cranmore, Cranmore West, Merryfield Lane Halt, and Mendip Vale, East Somerset Railway is a delightful way to spend a few hours or even a whole day experiencing the way travel used to be and soaking in the sights and sounds of days gone by.
There are plenty of events throughout the year to join in so why not pop along for a day out with Thomas the Tank Engine, the Teddy Bears Picnic, or bring mum and dad along for Mothers Day and Fathers day specials.
For those interested in history there are Vintage Vehicle Steam Gala’s, The Way We Were 1930’s-1950’s, and also chances to experience driving an engine.
Perhaps a murder mystery trip or and spooky special will appeal to your sinister side or just pop along for one of the many lunch time trips and other wine and dine or coffee and meal offers available.
With plenty of Christmas and Santa specials too there is always something to do on the East Somerset Railway throughout the year so pop along or check out the website for further details of what is available at the time of your visit.
You can also visit the workshops and see an authentic signal box in action to get a real flavour of how it all ran smoothly so there really is something for everyone.
There are services running most weekends between April and September and some weekdays too with various Santa specials running during December. The Office is open for enquiries between 9.30am and 3.00pm Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between January and March and 9.30am and 4.00pm the rest of the year.
