Derbyshire and Peak District fishing
...reel good fun!
One of the secrets about the Peak District is the quality of the trout fishing. There are two large still waters that have got to be amongst the best in the country for scenery, value for money and quality of fishing. There are also several small still waters for the visiting trout angler where the sport can be just as good.
The river fishing in the Peak District is placed, quite rightly, on such a high pedestal, that you would expect none to be available to the visiting angler, however we have managed to locate a couple of stretches that have day tickets available.
The jewel in the crown has to be the Derwent Reservoir at Ladybower. This is the only water in England where you can get a day ticket to fish for true wild brown trout . This reservoir has never been stocked since it was built and holds a very good head of genuine wild brown trout.
These are best fished for in the age-old manner of ‘stalking’ your fish with traditional wet flies. The scenery, incidentally, is absolutely spectacular
The main reservoir, Ladybower, is stocked weekly and is a very popular venue. The other large still water in the area is Carsington reservoir, built about ten years ago. Carsington is becoming well known for its quality brown trout fishing as well as a centre for a variety of other water-sports.
Two small still waters that have to be mentioned are ‘Barlow’ and ‘Press Manor’. They are both excellent venues for the visiting angler having well stocked trout lakes for fly-fishing and also coarse fishing day ticket availability.
On the rivers we have managed to locate the following places for day ticket fishermen.
The first is on the River Derwent just below Ladybower reservoir and the second is on the River Wye and belongs to The Peacock Hotel at Rowsley, which is not far from Chatsworth.
Both these stretches enjoy a fantastic mayfly hatch at the appropriate time of the year and provide good dry fly fishing throughout the summer.
