BOSCASTLE – A BRIEF HISTORY
Many years ago Boscastle was a thriving, but small port, welcoming cargo vessels that brought coal from South Wales and took slate from local cornish quarries around the UK. The arrival of the railway saw a dramatic decline in the movement of goods by sea the UK, for Boscastle and Cornwall and it was mostly local fisherman who survived the economic change of the day.
As the years went by, more visitors started to arrive in the county by the same railways that had forced the decline in the area's other industry's. Boscastle, with its beautiful countryside adjoining the stunning and rugged North Cornwall Coast, was ideally placed to welcome a new industry.
In 2004, Boscastle became a village known the world over. One August day, flash floods, two and a half inches of rainfall and two flooded rivers, combined to devastate the main street. Villagers and tourists were rescued from homes and shops as a ten foot wall of water pounded the village.
Today has seen a remarkable recovery by this small community, many shops and businesses are back up and running and the harbour village has continued to maintain it's beauty and attraction.
