...a thrill a minute
Alton Towers is a theme park and resort situated in the grounds of a former stately home in Staffordshire.
It attracted 3.1 million visitors in 2008, making it the second most visited theme park in the UK after Pleasure Beach Blackpool. It is based north of the village of Alton in Staffordshire (approximately 16 miles east of Stoke-on-Trent) and just outside the Peak District, in the grounds of a semi-ruined gothic revival country house of the same name, the former seat of the Earls of Shrewsbury.
