Summary:

The Lake District is one of the largest of the 12 National Parks within the UK covering 2,292 square kilometers. The landscape in the Lake District varies greatly from spectacular mountain ranges and tranquil lakes to sandy beaches. Scafell Pike England’s highest mountain is located in the Lake District which stands at 3,210ft; the area is also home to England’s largest inland water - Lake Windermere. The Lake District is within easy driving distance of Penrith and Carlisle, Eden Valley and Cumbria's West Coast where there is plenty more to see and do and is one reason for its sustained popularity.

Lake District Character
The Lake District has a very rich history which is influenced in the character of the area; the fields are lined with hedges and dry stone walls and make for stunning views against the mountains and lakes. The Lake District first became famous in the early 19th Century through the work of the famous poet William Wordsworth who for most of his life lived in the village of Cockermouth.

Recreation and Leisure
The Lake District has a massive range of activities to offer and is set in an amazing location for an activity holiday. Mountaineering originated in the Lake District and there are so many other outdoor pursuits to be found horse riding, fishing, canoeing, water skiing, cycling, sailing, hill walking and golf to name a few! Or if you fancy something a little more relaxing you can enjoy a leisurely stroll around one of the charming market towns or why not even take a cruise on one of the lakes.

If you enjoy shopping there is plenty of opportunity to shop! Shops range from large factory outlets to small specialist shops. There are also endless craft, antique and book shops spread all over the lengths of the Lake District.
