Privately owned and Passionately run, a Relaxing and Romantic getaway. About Us Sheila and Nick Gilbey were inspired by the unique charm of this medieval house in Charmouth. Built before the Reformation by the last Abbot of Forde Abbey, it has had many uses over the centuries. Charles II stayed here when he was fleeing from Oliver Cromwell's army. In the last century it became a hotel and was named The Queens Armes, as it was thought that Queen Catherine of Aragon may have stayed here. Set in the pretty town of Charmouth with a glorious beach only 5 minutes walk away, beautiful coastal walks, and market towns like Bridport to idly wander around, The Abbots Retreat is the perfect base if you want to explore the South West.
