About Us
 
Sheila and Nick Gilbey were inspired by the unique charm of this medieval house in Charmouth. Built before the Reformation by the last Abbot of Forde Abbey, it has had many uses over the centuries. Charles II stayed here when he was fleeing from Oliver Cromwell's army. In the last century it became a hotel and was named The Queens Armes, as it was thought that Queen Catherine of Aragon may have stayed here.

Set in the pretty town of Charmouth with a glorious beach only 5 minutes walk away, beautiful coastal walks, and market towns like Bridport to idly wander around, The Abbots Retreat is the perfect base if you want to explore the South West. 

The popular coastal town of Lyme Regis is a 5 minute drive to the West, with frequent buses also serving the route. Further afield the cathedral city of Exeter offers plenty shopping opportunities in its newly redeveloped centre, with national chains and independent boutique and designer stores.
 
Bedroom

The bedroom has a king-sized double bed. It is equipped with a freeview TV and DVD player, hairdryer and full length mirror. It faces south overlooking the garden.
 
Lounge

The lounge has a sitting area with two armchairs, sofa, TV and a dining room table. It is equipped with the following; Freeview TV, VHS and DVD players  There is also a small library of videos and DVDs. Wireless internet access is available free of charge.
 
Kitchen

The kitchen is fully equipped for two people and has a dining area with wall mounted Freeview TV. The equipment includes; Gas cooker, fridge/freezer, microwave, toaster, kettle, dishwasher, washing machine, iron, ironing board, clothes airer, kettle, food processor, steamer, Kenwood Chef mixer and a large selection of china and cooking equipment.
 
Bathroom 

The bathroom has a hand basin, W.C., a bath with shower and heated towel rail.
 
Conservatory

There is also a small conservatory with chairs and a coffee table. The conservatory overlooks The Abbots House garden.
 
Other Information

The accommodation gives ample space over two floors for two people. . The property is also non smoking throughout.Also we cannot accept pets.

Electricity and gas are included in the rental fee as well as the use of bed linen, towels and tea towels. Beach towels are not provided.

The occupants of The Abbots Retreat have use of the Abbots House garden and the private car park.

We also offer a ‘Welcome Pack' - box of local produce and necessities to get you started - by arrangement.
