The accommodation, recently renovated, comprises three bedrooms and an open plan ground floor area of lounge, dining area and kitchen. The lounge boasts a nice leather sofa and a modern flat screen digital tv with dvd player. Over on the other side of the room there’s a lovely oak table surrounded by elegant dining chairs and a long church pew.

The best feature here however is the fantastic rotating log fire. You can face it towards the dining table as you sit down to have your meal then turn it around to follow you as you retire into the lounge. It’s well worth lighting the fire just for that romantic touch but it’s worth mentioning that the barn is more than adequately heated by an external carbon neutral wood pellet burner. A comforting thought in this unspoit setting.

The kitchen is vey well equipped. Everything you’d want, a large fridge freezer, dishwasher, microwave and large cooking range. There’s a nice bright feel here, and again, clean modern lines characterize the space.

There’s one bedroom on the ground floor. It’s a little snug in there, but great if any of your party has any mobility problems. The bed can be made up as a double or a twin, so let us know if you have a strong preference. There’s also a wc with a nice large shower on this ground floor.

Climb up the plush open tread staircase to get to the other two bedrooms. The master bedroom again, has the option of being a twin or double room. Walk across the connecting walkway with it’s glass and brushed steel balustrade to the 3rd bedroom. 3 single beds in this room, great for the children perhaps although the beds are full sized. These two rooms share a central bathroom with a nice, large freestanding bath. (If you’ve had a long day in the mountains make sure you get in there first and lock the door behind you!)

Location

The cottage overlooks fields of grazing sheep and cows and out onto similar lush fields on the far side of the valley. The back garden in contrast has more of a woodland feel. A maze of grassy pathways wind their way between trees and shrubs. Just perfect for a game of hide and seek. Although the small brook which winds it’s way through the garden means that younger children shouldn’t be left unsupervised.

This southern part of Snowdonia is less well known than the north. But the mountains here offer a wealth of walking opportunities in much the same way. Arguably a day in these mountains is more satisfying due to the fact that they are more undiscovered.

Other traditional attractions such as fishing, narrow gauge railways and craft centers are all accessible from the cottage. But more adventurous activities have certainly gained a firm foothold in this area. As well as white water rafting and mountaineering, there are numerous challenging mountain biking trails in the area. The owners Russ and Nicki are keen bikers themselves so there’s a secure lockup for bikes, available for guests.

Nearby towns include the seaside resorts of Abedyfi and Barmouth which are both about 30mins away by car. About 20 mins away by car, the market towns of Dolgellau and Machynlleth are steeped in Welsh history. The lakes at Bala and LLyn Vyrnwy are other popular destinations.

"Spent Christmas 2011 at Pentre Wern, enjoyed every minute.
Everything you could wish for is provided, just need to bring towels!
Little welcome pack of essentials was a nice touch, including our first
night’s fire wood.
Good kitchen facilities, comfortable beds and sofa in lounge make
staying in a pleasure when the rain gets a bit much…
The bike store and dry room also make great sense and are a real
bonus after a blast around Coed Y Brenin’s many MTB trails.
Would definitely recommend and will certainly being staying there
again this year."

Simon, Julia & Family

"Absolutely great cottage. Probably the best we have stayed in.
The owners were really helpful and nothing was too much trouble.
Would really recommend, cottage is clean modern and no expense has been spared in this cottage. :0)
Will be back again."

"Great barn in a great location, hosts very helpful. Would highly recommend and will return."

Fletcher, Leigh

"We stayed for the Jubilee/half term week. The weather really wasn’t on our side the but fabulous barn was clean, welcoming and a lovely place to go back to after a day out.
The conversion has been done beautifully and thoughtfully and I have no qualms whatsoever about recommending Pentre Wern as a place to stay, for adults or families.
Nicki and Rus (and Talisker!) were warm and welcoming and made sure that we had everything we needed to make our holiday comfortable (although even they can’t control the weather!).
As a place to stay and relax is it fantastic and as a location to explore Snowdonia and the surrounding area, it’s perfect."

Lisa Dalton, Amersham

"A big thank you to Nicki and Russ.
They gave us a warm welcome, lovely place to stay and some good tips on where to visit.
We all enjoyed our stay and would highly reccommend Pentre Wern."

Sarah and Allan, Northumberland
