Tissington Well Dressing

Well dressing is in ancient tradition unique to Derbyshire. Tissington has been celebrating the life giving water from the wells for centuries, possibly since 1349, after the village survived a terrible outbreak of the Black Death. Six wells are dressed in Tissington.

A blessing service will take place on Thursday 17 May at 11.00am in St Mary's Church, followed by blessing each well from around 12 noon.

The Railway Tunnels Walk - Ranger Guided Walk at Bakewell

8 mile linear walk (with return transport) along a former railway and passing through open tunnels, to look at its history and wildlife. On tracks and trails with a climb at the end. Meet Bakewell Old Station car park, off A619, Bakewell (GR: 223 690) (PC: DE45 1GE)

Introduction to Kinder Scout - Ranger Guided Walk

11 mile walk onto Kinder Scout to introduce the walker to this dramatic part of the Peak District. Strenuous walk, with steep ascents. Meet Bowden Bridge car park. Derbyshire Food and Drink Festival at Hardwick Hall

Over 150 stalls showcase the very best local food and drink from Derbyshire and the Peak District, as well as unique and exotic foods from further afield. Goods range from meats, pickles, wines cakes, chocolates, organic produce, cookery ware and much more.

Celebrity chefs deliver demonstrations in the cookery theatre throughout the weekend with TV chef Simon Rimmer back by popular demand. Renowned Derbyshire chefs demonstrate their culinary skills and signature dishes. Names to be confirmed.

Adults £4.00, Concessions £2.00, Children under 16 free. Visitors to the Food Fair can get 2 for 1 entry to Hardwick Hall and gardens.

Ashford in the Water Well Dressing Construction

Find out more about this ancient custom by watching the well dressers working to dress the well. Clay and natural materials are used to produce a picture or design.

The five locations in the village (DE45 1QF), all signposted and open at various times, are:

Old School (2 wells), Garage on Court Lane, Old Chapel on Court Lane, Garage on Old Road/Hall End Lane, plus the Garage on Greaves Lane.

Find out more about this ancient custom by watching the well dressers working on the dressing. The design is placed on top of the wet clay which fills the well dressing boards and ‘pricked out’ – small holes made along each line of the picture with a knife or skewer, like a dot-to-dot picture. The design is then outlined in wool and ‘coloured in’ using natural materials – leaves, flower petals…

Noon onwards – the making of the Garland and Queen Posy – this year at Mill Lane Barns

4.30pm Maypole is erected

5.30pm King and Consort ride the Village Bounds

6.30pm Procession begins from The George Pub

8.00pm/8.30pm The Garland is hoisted up the Church Tower and the girls dance the Maypole

This ancient custom of decorating springs and wells with pictures made from natural materials, is only found in Derbyshire. In Monyash 3 wells are dressed. Refreshments are available at the Bulls Head and The Smithy café.

Well Locations: Car park on Chapel Street, front of School on Church Street, back of the school in the garden.

Ashford in the Water Well Dressing


This ancient custom is unique to Derbyshire. In Ashford-in-the-Water, 6 wells are dressed on different themes.

A blessing service will take place on Sunday 3 June, 3pm at Trinity Church followed by procession around the wells

Refreshments will be served all week at the Old School Community Rooms where an art exhibition by the Village Arts Group will be on show. The Institute will also be serving refreshments a few days in the week.

Monday 4th June

Crooked Spire Open Day


A guided tour of the Tower of Chesterfield's famous Church with an opportunity to look up into the Crooked Spire and out over the town. Climb approximately 144 steps, then walk out onto the top of the Tower for a close up look at the Spire.

On the way, visit the Belfry and discover fascinating facts about the Church and its history.

Midsummer Meadows


Held at Derbyshire Dales National Nature Reserve, Nr Bakewell - find out why the haymeadows are so special. Use flowers as an inspiration for art and craft activities as well as helping to record flowers from the 2012 'Meet the Species' list. There will also be a chance to dip for creatures in the dewponds.

Peak District Artisans Exhibit at The Great Dome

Peak District Artisans’ most prestigious event of the year, the Great Dome Art Fair 2012 will take place on July 21st and 22nd.

The award winning event - part of Buxton’s Festival Fringe - showcases the eclectic range of talent within the group including artists, photographers, designer makers artisans and many more.

This year the event will be supporting Helen’s Trust by donating the proceeds of an exclusive auction to the charity. A selection of members will contribute pieces – some designed and produced specifically for the event – to a silent auction that will take place during the private view on the eve of the fair. 

The exhibition runs 10am – 4.30pm. Admission is free.

2012 Bakewell Show

The Bakewell Show is one of Derbyshire’s largest agricultural shows.  Over 300 trade stands, competitive classes for horses, dogs, cattle, sheep, goats, pigeons, poultry, horticulture, dairy & meat products, floral art, show jumping and vintage vehicles.  Together with several attractions, children’s entertainment and a varied food hall, Bakewell Show is a great day out for the whole family

The Ashover Show 2012

This year will see the 81st Ashover Show, however the Ashover Agricultural and Horticultural Society can trace its origins back to 1924.  We are proud to offer you a traditional country show which has something to entertain every member of your family.

The Hope Show 2012

Hope Show is the traditional end of summer agricultural show based in the Hope Valley between Castleton and Hope. Wide range of activities for all the family including a main ring programme of attractions, 2 day sheep dog trials, light & heavy horse show, cattle, sheep and Hope Valley Young Farmers show, Alpaca & sheep fleece show, High Peak Poultry Club exhibition.

Midlands Retriever Club gun dog demonstration, Vintage tractor and stationary engines parade, Classic & Veteran cars, Horticulture and Craft competitions with local produce auction.

2012 Chatsworth Country Fair

Held in the park of Chatsworth House, home to the Dukes of Devonshire, the 2012 event will be the 31st Country Fair. It has become one of the largest events of its type in England, and is an essential part of the Derbyshire and Midlands calendar. Given good weather, crowds of the order of 90,000 people can be expected over the three days. The focus of the Show is the Grand Ring on the "big flat", with over 300 trade stands and crafts. Around the park are over 40 showground attractions, many with a country theme.
